China Scholarships – The 2021/2022 Guide for International Students
Over the past decade, China has established one of the largest higher education systems in the world. Chinese graduates dominate the largest numbers worldwide annually, with many excelling in different industries and fields. China is also home to top-tier universities that have kept moving upwards in major global university ranking tables.
Recognizing the role of quality education in national industrialization and social progress, the Chinese government offers numerous scholarships for resident and international students. In fact, China is one of the most generous countries providing scholarships to foreign students and there are currently over 50,000 international students in China with scholarships.
The scholarships can be very valuable, overring the tuition fees, accommodation and living expenses worth up to $30,000 USD.

CSC Scholarships – Chinese Government Scholarships
CSC scholarships are one of the most common scholarships awarded to international students. Provided by the Chinese Scholarship Council, this type of government scholarship is a initiative of the Chinese Ministry of Education to promote education, cultural exchange, political cooperation and mutual understanding between other countries and China. CSC scholarships can be partially or full-funded.
CSC does not cover MBA programs, MBBS programs (MBBS have very limited scholarships), or those programs with a very high tuition fee. You will need to look at the other types of scholarships below.
Undergraduate, master’s and doctoral students who qualify for a government scholarship receive a monthly stipend, free tuition and free accommodation during their study.
NOTE: There are many different websites with information about CSC scholarships, but the official website of the Chinese Scholarship Council is: www.csc.edu.cn.

The Chinese Scholarship Council has a few different types of scholarships:
– Type A – Bilateral Program
– Type B – Chinese University Program
– Great Wall Program
Some students ask us about Chinese embassy scholarships. This is actually the Chinese Scholarship Council scholarship Type A which is handled by the embassies all around the world (see the video above). You can read more here.
The majority of universities in China offer scholarships for students. These scholarships can cover your tuition fees, as well as the cost of your accommodation.
Xiamen University for instance, is offering five different scholarships for international students so they can study in China. The application process to apply for university scholarships is more simple than CSC scholarships. You can see the full list here.

In order to support development of Confucius Institutes, facilitate Chinese language promotion and Chinese cultural transmission in the world, cultivate qualified Chinese language teachers and talented students of Chinese language, Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) launches the “Confucius Institute Scholarships” program for providing sponsorship to students, scholars and Chinese language teachers of other countries for pursuing a study in relevant universities in China.

How Much Are the Scholarship Worth?

There are minor and full scholarships. They can include a portion or all of the tuition fee, accommodation, and some will pay living expenses every month which can be worth up to $30,000 USD.
3 Tips to Apply for the Scholarship

1) Apply early – the application deadline is open for a limited time only, so you need to apply on time. There are often too many students applying and so it may be hard to get feedback. Apply to multiple universities and scholarships. It is very competitive so it is better to apply to numerous opportunities.
2) Contacts – Try to get in contact with someone from the university and / or embassy so they can check your application documents are correct.
3) Prepare Documents Carefully – Because there are so many students applying it is important that you prepare all your application documents correctly. If you do not prepare them correctly then your application may not be processed.

How to Apply for Scholarship in China?
The largest scholarship is the Chinese government scholarship which is managed by the China Scholarship Council. The full scholarship typically includes all tuition fees, living expenses, accommodation, and some intercity travel. The amount of living expenses depend on whether you are a chinese language student, undergraduate, master’s or PhD student.

Apply By Yourself
You can apply for this scholarship yourself. Below is a step-by-step process:
- Register at the China Scholarship Council website.
- Fill out all the application documents correctly (any mistakes can cause your application to be rejected).
- Find an agency to sponsor your application.
- Apply and receive the acceptance letter from the University (failing to do this can result in you being assigned to a University by the scholarship committee).
Preparing Application Documents
Preparing the required documents is an important step to get a Chinese scholarship. In addition to providing soft copies of documents, you may also be required to provide hard copies for mailing.
Some of the most basic requirements include:
- Notarized highest diploma
- Academic transcripts
- A study plan or research proposal
- Recommendation letters
- If planning to stay in China for more than 6 months, you must submit a photocopy of Foreigner Physical Examination Form (valid for 6 months)
- Applicants with the Pre-admission Letter/Admission Letter from designated universities should enclose the letter in the application package
Chinese universities may require other documents as needed.
Scholarship Agents & Guaranteed Scholarships
Because there is a lack of information it can be difficult for international students to know about the process of applying for scholarships, there are a number of agents around the world who are selling “Guaranteed Scholarships”. This can be for a fee of $1000 USD-$4000 USD + You can find these on Facebook, Wechat, and Whatsapp. This is especially common in countries that do not speak English

We do not offer Guaranteed Scholarships, and on China Admissions you can not buy a scholarship. We believe it is better to be transparent and so we are trying our best to share all the information about scholarships so you are able to understand the process and apply by yourself.
We do have some universities that we regularly send students for Scholarships, such as Beijing Foreign Studies University but we do our best to share this information on our platform and you do not need to pay any extra fee.

Application Documents
Required documents are very similar for most universities in China. For more advanced degrees such as master’s and PhD, there may be a few additional documents to submit. The basic ones that you need to prepare include:

How To Get A Student Visa
1) Choose a student visa category. There are two types: X1 which is for students staying for more than 180 days in China and X2 for students staying less than 180 days.
2) Complete the application form here and submit all the required documents to the Chinese Embassy/ Consulate General in your country of residence.
3) Pay the visa application fee at the Visa Office of the Chinese Embassy. Regular processing is four business days, but this might be different from country to country.

Chinese Language Program Acceptance Rates
The acceptance rate for Chinese language programs have been high and China Admissions has made the application process much more easier for students to apply. It takes less than 12 minutes to complete the application for Chinese Language program in China on China Admissions platform. China Admissions has a 98% acceptance rate for Chinese language programs.
The most common reasons for not being accepted are:
1) – Students Age (being under 18 or over 65)
2) – Nationality – there are some countries that can’t be accepted
3) – Not preparing the documents correctly
We strongly suggest you take the Quiz to check your eligibility before applying. With such a high acceptance rate, most of the time you only need to apply to one Chinese program, but it might be a good idea to apply to 2 or more if you would like to have more options.
MBBS Acceptance Rates

MBBS programs are extremely competitive in China and are filled up each year. The quality of students applying for MBBS programs is very high. So the most common reason for being rejected is that the student was good, but there were stronger students applying. The acceptance rates for MBBS students is around 58%. If you are applying for an MBBS program we strongly suggest you apply to 3-5 universities, and we also have a MBBS application service to help you through the process.
MBA Acceptance Rates
MBA program acceptance rates are quite competitive depending on if you are applying for a top MBA in China. The acceptance rates for MBA programs are highly personalised according to each student. The most important thing is to have a good GMAT score, and to answer the essay questions well and perform well in the interview.

What is the application process for Chinese Universities?

The first steps are to choose the programs, pay the application fee and upload the application documents.
Once submitted to China Admissions, we will review your application within 2-3 days and proceed to the university or ask you for further clarification
After it has been processed to the university you will receive your unique application ID from each university.
The university may contact you directly for further questions.
We will then follow up each week with the university for updates. As soon as there is any update we will let you know. If you have made other plans, decide to withdraw / change address at any time please let us know.
After you have been accepted you will receive your admissions letter electronically and asked to pay the non-refundable deposit to the university.
Once you have paid the deposit the university will issue you the admissions letter and visa form to your home country.
Preparing Your Application Documents
Which documents do I need?
This depends on if you are applying for Chinese, Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD. The documents is very similar for most universities in China, with a few changes. You can find the exact requirements on the application form when you start applying on the online system.


Preparing Your Documents
You need to upload the passport copy, photo and academic transcript. Your transcript is helpful for us to check eligibility. Some of the other documents such as recommendation letter, GMAT. If you are currently studying now and didn’t finish your program, you can still apply and send the documents later.
The International English Test (IET)
The International English Test (IET) is an online test to evaluate international students english level.
We are pleased to announce the online International English Test (IET). It is officially recognised by Chinese Universities as an official evaluation of your English level.
This has been recognised by 100% of applications in China in 2020, and we are offering a guaranteed refund if the university does not recognise it. (Please note that this can only be used for your university application and not for the CSC scholarship.)

First Time in China?
Studying and living in a foreign country is always an adventure but also be a huge headache. Studying in China is an amazing adventure but it comes with challenges as the language, culture, gastronomy and many other aspects can be very different from your home country.

Before Departure
There are some preparations you will need to make before boarding your plane. These are some we highly
recommend for you to consider:
- Pack appropriate clothing. Chinese universities offer programs starting at different times and seasons of the year;
have in mind when your program starts and make sure to pack accordingly. - Stock up on prescription medication or any medicine you are used to in your home country as getting them in China
can be difficult. - Prepare enough cash for the first two weeks or get a debit card that can be used in any major Chinese bank ATM
(consult with your local bank card issuer). Remember that you will need to pay your tuition fee on registration date. - Download and create a WeChat and Skype account if you don´t have one already, and have your family members
have one too for more convenient communication. Popular social media and messenger apps like Facebook,
Instagram and WhatsApp are blocked in China. Consider buying a VPN to access these sites and apps. - Make copies of all relevant documents as passport, visa, flight tickets, admission letter from university and any other
you consider might be important during your stay in China. - Write down in a piece of paper or create a note in your phone with your university and/or accommodation address
and phone number. - Prepare toiletries and cosmetics of your preference as some popular brands might be more expensive or even
unavailable in China. - Buy an international insurance that can cover you in case of any emergencies.
China X Student Visa

The China X Student Visa is issued to an applicant who comes to China for study, advanced studies or intern practice for a period of more than six months.
An applicant who comes to China to study, short-term advanced studies or intern practice for a period of no more than six months shall apply for an (F) Visa.

What are the requirements?
1. Valid and original passport with at least one blank visa page. It should also be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of application.
2. Visa Application Form with one passport photo. Only color photo with light background like light blue and white is acceptable.
3. Approved Foreign Student Visa Application Form (JW201 or JW202) issued by the authorized Chinese unit, and an enrollment letter from the Chinese school.
4. Physical Examination Certificate for foreign citizen who plans to study in China for more than one year.
5. Chinese passport or last foreign passport with a Chinese visa for those born in China who apply for a Chinese visa with a new foreign passport.
How do I apply for the China X Student Visa?
You can apply for an X visa (study visa) in your home country. In order to do this, you will need to go to the Visa Office of the Chinese embassy in your home country with your admissions letter, Visa Application Form (also known as the JW202 form) and other requirements.
Mailed applications are not accepted and will be refused. Please note that it is no longer possible for students to come to Beijing on a tourist visa (L visa) and then convert this into a study (X) visa when in Beijing.
How long is the processing time?
For regular processing time, it usually takes 4 working days. If you want express service, it takes 2 to 3 working days with a $20 fee charged for each visa. A same day rush service is also available, with additional service fee of $30 for one working day process time.
Notes to remember
- Incorrectly filled out visa application forms may cause a delay in processing or refusal of the requested visa.
- China X Student Visa’s are valid for one entry, three months. The visa holder should undergo residential formalities in the local public security department within thirty days of entry in China.
- American citizens may apply multiple entry (X) visas valid for 12 months.
- Other relevant documents may be required by Visa officers.
